Franz Vranitzky

chancellor finance banking minister

Austrian statesman and chancellor (1986–97). He studied at what is now the University of Commerce, Vienna, embarked on a career in banking, and in 1970 became adviser on economic and financial policy to the minister of finance. After holding senior appointments in the banking world he became minister of finance himself in 1984, and then federal chancellor. In 1997 he was appointed personal representative to Albania of the chair of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).
