In the Christian Church, the Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday of the weeks (Ember Weeks) following the first Sunday in Lent, Whitsunday, Holy Cross Day (14 Sep) and St Lucy's Day (13 Dec); formerly observed as special times of fasting and abstinence.
