Small city in E Cambridgeshire, EC England, UK; in fertile, wheat-growing fens, on R Ouse, 23 km/14 mi NE of Cambridge; railway; paper, agriculture, engineering, plastics, tourism; 12th-c cathedral (octagonal tower), King's School (1543); Isle of Ely (higher ground surrounded by fens) the location of Hereward the Wake's defence against the Normans.
