Elsa Morante - Biography, Bibliography

Writer, born in Rome, Latium, Italy. She began her career with a collection of short stories, Il gioco segreto (1941), followed by Le straordinarie avventure di Caterina (1959). In the novels Menzogna e sortilegio (1948) and L'isola di Arturo (1957) she is already formulating her trademark style of escaping from painful reality through a kind of symbolic fantasy. Her rebellion to the slavery of history has stylistic tones in Il mondo salvato dai ragazzini (1968) and is fully developed in the ambitious La Storia (1974).
