Thriller writer, born in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. During World War 2 he served in the US Navy, and afterwards studied English literature at Detroit. Throughout the 1950s he worked in advertizing as a copywriter, but from 1967 concentrated on screenplays and novels. Regarded as the foremost crime writer in America, his books include Unknown Man No. 89 (1977), La Brava (1983), Touch (1987), Get Shorty (1990, filmed 1995), and a sequel, Be Cool (1999). Later works include A Coyote's in the House! (2004), The Hot Kid (2005), and a collection of early tales, The Complete Western Stories (2006). He received the Crime Writers' Association Diamond Dagger award in 2006.
