Elizabeth Bishop - Early life, Young adulthood, Writing career, Works, Prizes and Awards


Poet and writer, born in Worcester, Massachusetts, USA. She studied at Vassar College (1934 BA), and then travelled widely. She was the Consultant in Poetry, Library of Congress (1949–50), spent many years in Brazil (1952–67), and taught at Harvard (1970–9). Known for her meditative and personal poetry, her collections North and South (1946) and A Cold Spring (1955), received the Pulitzer Prize in 1956. The Complete Poems was published in 2004.
