Judge, born near Georgetown, Indiana, USA. As a US senator (Democrat, Indiana, 1935), he promoted New Deal legislation and rose to assistant majority whip. He served as a judge on the US Circuit Court of Appeals (1941–9) until President Harry Truman named him to the Supreme Court (1949–56).
