A white, pigeon-like shorebird, native to the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic; short, stout bill with horny cover at base; the only native Antarctic bird without webbed feet; flies reluctantly but well; eats shore animals and seaweed; often scavenges in penguin colonies. (Family: Chionididae, 2 species.)
