shadow puppets

theatre sticks screen

Puppets which are manipulated in performance so as to cast a shadow on a screen. There are two major traditions. In one, the sticks operating the two-dimensional figures are worked from below, as with Balinese and Javanese shadow theatre. In the other, the sticks are operated from behind, at right angles to the screen, and the puppets are pressed close to its surface, as with Chinese and Turkish shadow theatre.
