Small, herring-like fish (Alosa sapidissima) native to the Atlantic seaboard of North America but now widespread on the Pacific coast also; adults live in coastal marine waters migrating into fresh water to breed; live in large schools feeding mainly on plankton; length up to 75 cm/30 in; silver with greenish-blue upper surface. (Family: Clupeidae.)
