Journalist, born in Chicago, Illinois, USA. He studied at the University of Chicago and is recognized as an aggressive, highly successful investigative reporter. He worked variously for United Press International, the Associated Press, the New York Times, the Atlantic Monthly, and The New Yorker, and played key roles in exposing evidence of the My Lai massacre in Vietnam, domestic spying by the Central Intelligence Agency, and other stories, winning a 1970 Pulitzer Prize and many other major awards. His books include The Price of Power (1983), a scathing portrait of Henry Kissinger.
