National Road - History

A road built in the early 19th-c from Cumberland, MD, to Vandalia, IL, and eventually to St Louis, MO. Its construction and repair were financed initially by government sales of land, but in the 1830s this became the responsibility of the states through which it passed. The National Road played an important role in the expansion of the West.
