Mary of Modena

james william duke future

Queen consort of Britain and Ireland (1685–88), the second wife of James II. The only daughter of Alfonso IV, Duke of Modena, she married James in 1673 when he was Duke of York. They lost five daughters and a son in infancy, but in 1688 she gave birth to James Francis Edward Stuart (the future ‘Old Pretender’). When William of Orange (the future William III) landed in England later that year, she escaped to France with her infant son, to be joined there later by her deposed husband. She spent the rest of her life at St Germain.
