Film actress, born in Quincy, Illinois, USA. She made her film debut in The Beggar Maid (1921) and was soon established as a beautiful innocent in such historical dramas as Beau Brummell (1924) and Don Juan (1926). She won an Oscar for The Great Lie (1941, with Bette Davis). Other films included The Maltese Falcon (1941), Meet Me in St Louis (1944) and Return to Peyton Place (1961), and she was also active on stage and television.
