Island unitary authority (from 1996) in NW Wales, UK; separated from Gwynedd by Menai Strait, spanned by two bridges; chief towns, Holyhead, Beaumaris, Amlwch, Llangefni, Menai Bridge; linked to Holy I by an embankment (the Cob); ferry link from Holyhead to Dun Laoghaire and Dublin, Ireland; agriculture, aluminium, sheep rearing, marine engineering, tourism; RAF base at Valley; Ucheldre Centre, Oriel Môn, Beaumaris Castle, Sea Zoo, Plas Newydd.
