Any of several small, brightly coloured fish found in shallow waters of warm seas, commonly around coral reefs; deep, flattened body; small mouth, with gill cover bearing a spine; very popular in marine aquaria; also called butterfly fish. The name is also used for monkfish. (Family: Chaetodontidae.)
