Andrew Stevenson

virginia ambassador

US representative and ambassador, born in Culpeper Co, Virginia, USA. The son of a minister, he was a lawyer in Richmond and a member of the Virginia house of delegates (1809–21). In Congress (Democrat, Virginia, 1821–34; as Speaker, 1827–34), he alienated Whigs with his partisan committee appointments and Southern Democrats with his opposition to nullification. Appointed ambassador to Britain (1834–41), he returned to become president of the Virginia agricultural society and rector at the University of Virginia.
