machine mill

Millwright and inventor, born in Houston Mill, East Lothian, E Scotland, UK. He inherited his father's mill, and invented the fantail (1750), a machine for dressing grain (1768), and the spring sail (1772). His most significant invention was a drum threshing machine which could be worked by wind, water, horse, or (some years later) steam power. He obtained a patent in 1788 and built a factory, but derived very little financial return.
