Writer, born in London, England, UK. Born to Jamaican parents, her first three novels, the semi-autobiographical Every Light in the House Burnin' (1994), Never Far From Nowhere (1996), and Fruit of the Lemon (1999), explore the problems faced by black British-born children of Jamaican emigrants. Later novels include Small Island (2004), which won the Orange Prize for Fiction and the Whitbread Best Novel and Book of the Year. Other work includes the short stories Deborah (1998) and Loose Change (2004).
