He began his acting career in television at the age of 14, moved into films, and became known after his Oscar-nominated role for Best Supporting Actor in What's Eating Gilbert Grape? (1993). Later films include Romeo + Juliet (1996), Titanic (1997), The Beach (2000), Gangs of New York (2002), The Aviator (2004, Golden Globe Best Actor; Best Actor Oscar nomination), and The Departed (2006).
