Actor, born in Liverpool, Merseyside, NW England, UK. Originally an insurance clerk, he first appeared on stage in Preston, made his London debut in 1957, and his Broadway debut in 1963. His film debut was in A Kind of Loving (1962), and he subsequently appeared in Billy Liar (1963), and King Rat (1965). His theatre work included Banana Box (1973), which was adapted as the television series Rising Damp (1974–8), bringing him great acclaim. His comic talents were further employed on television in The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin (1976–80), in a variety of stage appearances, including Loot (1984), and in films, such as Water (1985).
