legume

seeds valves

A dry, 1–many-seeded fruit of the pea family (Leguminosae). When ripe it splits into two valves, each bearing alternate seeds. The splitting may be explosive, or the valves may twist to help scatter the seeds. Many kinds are eaten as vegetables.
