Amanullah Khan

Ruler of Afghanistan (1919–29), born in Pagman, E Afghanistan. After an inconclusive religious war against the British in India (1919–22), independence for Afghanistan was recognized by Britain with the Treaty of Rawalpindi (1922). He assumed the title of king in 1926, but his zeal for Westernizing reforms provoked rebellion in 1928. He abdicated and fled the country in 1929, and went into exile in Rome.
